Join us to celebrate and learn about First Nations and Métis cultures.
From Beardy's & Okemasis Cree Nation, and growing up in the small town of Port Alberni, British Columbia, Chanelle was excited to reconnect with her Plains Cree culture when she moved back to Saskatoon at age 16.
While in high school in Saskatoon, she was able to join the Indigenous Ensemble where she first learned to dance Jingle. She also attended her first powwow at the U of S, and the way she felt when she heard the drums and singing at the powwow resonated in her chest and was emotional – what she had longed for since she was young. When she went out to the dancing area, guided by the heartbeat drum, she started moving with whatever footwork came to her, and her kokum noticed she was moving like a fancy shawl dancer. That was the start of Chanelle’s journey as a Traditional Women’s Fancy and Fancy Shawl dancer.
Her love of dancing, and being an inspiration for people to reconnect to their culture, is what inspires her daily. Hiy Hiy.

The Mayfair Library was established in 1952 in the basement of the Mayfair Community Hall. By 1989, the building was no longer suitable for the library and the basement location presented accessibility problems. The current Mayfair Library was reopened in 1991, on the same site, after a one-year break in service during construction.
