Candis Kirkpatrick is a Saskatchewan playwright and novelist. Born and raised in Mossbank, she raised her children in Moose Jaw and now lives outside of North Battleford.
Crows & Cheesecake tells the story of Naddy Bennet—from her divorce after 22 years of marriage, to living alone for another 20, then finding love in her 60’s but experiencing loss too soon. Her family interprets her grief as an inability to be on her own and convinces her to move to a senior’s home. Naddy is assured that she will be free to do as she pleases and to come and go as she wants. All too soon she finds herself taken to task for just being “Naddy”. When her daughter sides with the home’s manager, Naddy realizes that if she is going to have control over her remaining years, she can’t stay.
So, she runs away. What she finds is a stranger who offers her a place ‘just to be’. He accepts running across a woman, alone, relieving herself in the bushes off the road. She needs a place to stay the night and he’s got one. There begins a beautiful life of companionship, lived without expectations and with acceptance, for both.
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll relate.
